New patients typically have a number of questions about chiropractic care. Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.
What is chiropractic?
Doctors of chiropractic treat a variety of health conditions, with a focus on interactions of the spine and nervous system. They are especially known for their ability to treat patients with injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system. These include back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a procedure chiropractors use to manipulate joints of the body that are out of alignment or not moving properly. The goal is to restore or enhance joint function and eliminate interference with the nervous system. The adjustment can be performed by hand or using a small instrument.
What is a subluxation?
A subluxation occurs when one or more spinal vertebrae shift out of position. That can stress or irritate nearby nerves, impeding the body’s ability to function properly. Adjustments are intended to eliminate the subluxation and provide an overall improvement in health and wellness.
Why do adjustments make a popping sound?
Joints sometimes produce a popping or cracking sound when manipulated. The change in pressure within the joint results in the release of gas bubbles. The sound is similar to the noise you hear when you open a can of soda, releasing the pressurized gas inside. Patients who haven’t experienced chiropractic are sometimes afraid of that sound, which they interpret as bones being cracked. In fact, a chiropractic adjustment does not affect the bones; it affects the connective tissue holding the joint together.
