Chiropractic Can Help Women Deliver Naturally, Study Indicates
A recent study slated for publication in the Journal of Manipulative Therapeutics in June suggests that chiropractic care can improve pregnant women’s chances for a natural delivery.
The study, funded by the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, was conducted by Dr. Heidi Haavik and co-investigators Dr. Jenny Kruger and Professor Bernadette Murphy.
The study showed that pregnant women adjusted by chiropractors had a greater ability to relax their pelvic floor muscles at rest. A woman who can’t both contract and relax these muscles as the baby moves through the birth canal will tire more quickly and may require more intervention in the birthing process.
This could mean that chiropractic care can help women have a natural vaginal delivery and avoid a C-section. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 32 percent of infants in the United States were delivered by Cesarean section in 2014. What’s more, medical studies have shown that abdominal incisions can cause a lifetime of back problems.
Another, unanticipated result of this study: Non-pregnant chiropractic students comprising the control group were able to contract their pelvic floor muscles to a degree previously seen only in elite athletes. Potentially, this could decrease the risk of future stress urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence and vaginal prolapse.
Haavik and Kruger have already embarked on a second study on stress urinary incontinence. Haavik suspects that vertical subluxations – or misalignments of the spinal bones – affect the ability to contract the muscles that keep women continent.
This is the first study to quantitatively assess the effect of spinal adjustment on pelvic floor muscle function. However, we already know that chiropractic offers many benefits to pregnant women. Chiropractic adjustments can ease your symptoms, relieve the stress on your lower back and pelvis, and regulate your hormonal highs and lows.
That’s because good health depends upon efficient operation of the spine and nervous system, with nerve energy from the brain traveling down the spinal cord and out to every organ and limb in the body. A misaligned spine disrupts the flow of energy – much like a kink in a garden hose disrupts the flow of water.
The solution is to realign the spine back to health through Chiropractic BioPhysics, or CBP, which corrects spinal misalignments by remodeling and realigning the spine to restore normal nerve flow. CBP is the most researched and results-oriented chiropractic technique.
Symmetry Health Center is among only a handful of chiropractic care facilities in Oakland and Alameda, California, certified in CBP. Dr. Cynthia Boyd and her chiropractic staff use state-of-the-art technology and equipment to diagnose and treat spinal conditions and postural distortions.
