Oakland Chiropractor Offers Aid for PMS and Cramps
If you suffer from painful menstrual cycles, known as dysmenorrhea, or premenstrual syndrome (PMS), you might benefit from the chiropractic care offered by Dr. Cynthia Boyd at Symmetry Health Center in Oakland and Alameda.
Medication can help, but it doesn’t get to the root cause of the problem. Research shows that the cause is often a misalignment of the spine. Misalignments occur when vertebrae shift out of position. When that happens, it puts pressure on the nerves flowing through the spine.
Those nerves comprise your body’s communications system, and misalignments interfere with their ability to send messages to and from the brain to control your limbs and organs. Chiropractors manipulate the spine to realign vertebrae that have shifted out of alignment.
Take, for example, a study conducted in 1992 involving 11 women with histories of PMS symptoms. Chiropractors gave them five to seven spinal adjustments per month over four menstrual cycles. The subjects, who filled out questionnaires at the beginning and end of care, reported improvement in all 10 categories: irritability, mood swings, tension, ineffectiveness, lack of motor coordination, mental/cognitive functioning, eating habits, variations in sexual drive and activity, overall physical symptoms and social impairment.
The greatest improvements were in sexual drive (70.7 percent), social impairment (64.5 percent) and mood swings (60.8 percent). The overall average improvement in all symptom categories was 44.2 percent.
Forty-five women participated in another pilot study in 1992. Twenty-four women received spinal manipulation; the control group of 21 women received a “sham” adjustment. The perception of pain and level of menstrual distress immediately after the adjustment improved significantly. The experimental group reported twice as much improvement in symptoms as the control group did.
If you live in Oakland, Alameda or the East Bay and are suffering from menstrual symptoms, consider a visit to Dr. Cynthia Boyd and her team at Symmetry Health Center, who are experts in Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP). CBP is a method of correcting spinal misalignments by remodeling and realigning the spine to restore normal nerve flow.
The team at Symmetry Health Center is among only a handful of Oakland, Alameda and East Bay chiropractors trained in CBP, the most researched and results-oriented corrective chiropractic technique. Chiropractors trained in CBP take chiropractic adjustment a step further by combining adjustments, exercises, and spinal remodeling programs to realign the spine back to health.
