Chiropractic Can Relieve Meneire’s Disease, Study Shows
A long-term research study reveals that chiropractic can be used to treat Meniere’s disease, a disorder of the inner ear characterized by vertigo (a spinning feeling), tinnitus (ringing in the ear) and pressure in the ear. These symptoms affect hearing and balance, and can continue for years, notes chiropractor Dr. Cynthia Boyd of Symmetry Health Center in Alameda and Oakland, California.
Dr. Michael T. Burcon, a chiropractor, began studying Menieure’s disease in 1999, after three of his patients recovered from Meniere’s after upper cervical chiropractic care. (Upper cervical care deals with the first two vertebrae.) Dr. Burcon began documenting cases that came to him and determined that all of them had experienced neck trauma—specifically, whiplash injuries affecting the fifth cranial nerve. The study followed 300 patients over six years, and improvements were noted year after year. The results of his study were published last month in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research.
About half of the traumas were caused by vehicular accidents, and the other half were head injuries. However, most patients didn’t list those injuries on their paperwork because they typically happened during high school or college years—and it took an average of 15 years for the symptoms to appear.
Your head rests on your C1 vertebra, known as the “atlas.” If your atlas is out of alignment (what chiropractors call a subluxation), the major symptoms are vertigo with vomiting. The C2 vertebra is called the “axis.” When the axis is the major subluxation, the major symptoms are hearing loss, ear fullness and tinnitus.
If one or both of your top two vertebrae are out of alignment, they put pressure on the base of your brainstem. This, in turn, interferes with the free flow of signals up and down your nervous system—which can lead to serious consequences, such as Meniere’s.
Patients treated by Dr. Burcon rated their vertigo on a 1 to 10 scale, with 10 being the most severe. Before treatment, the average score was 8.5. The score average 3 after six weeks. Among those who continued care for six years, the intensity averaged 0.8.
To date, Dr. Burcon has successfully treated more than 530 consecutive cases of people with Meniere’s disease.
