Symmetry Chiropractor: Try Chiropractic to Relieve Allergy Symptoms
With spring arriving in all its glory, allergies can’t be far behind.
When the body is exposed to an allergen, the immune system goes into action. It releases histamines, which sensitize the body to react and attempt to remove harmful substances by sneezing, coughing, etc.
Patients who visit chiropractors for reasons unrelated to allergies often report a reduction in their allergy symptoms. The reason can be traced to the spine, which houses your nervous system. Your nervous system, in turn, controls your immune system. That means any weakness in the nervous system, such as spinal misalignments – vertebrae that have shifted out of place in your spine – can compromise the immune system’s ability to protect your body against allergens.
With its focus on the spine, chiropractic care can relieve allergy symptoms by correcting spinal misalignments. A study published in 2004 offers evidence for chiropractic care by linking misalignments of the vertebrae to allergies. Misalignments of the thoracic spine were present in 98 percent of 1028 patients who suffered from allergic disease. The researchers also linked the misalignments to a specific area of the spine – the T8 to T10 level of the thoracic spine.
The problem with misalignments is that they exert excessive pressure on the delicate nerves in the spine, interfering with proper communication between the brain and your immune function. Chiropractic adjustments help restore alignment and open required pathways of communication between the brain and the nervous system.
Adjustments can also help regulate the rush of histamine and amount of cortisol produced during high allergy season. Cortisol is an anti-inflammatory hormone produced by the adrenal gland, which combats the inflammation caused by histamines. The adrenal gland is fed directly by the T9 spinal level nerve root, and many allergy sufferers have weak adrenal gland function. Thus, further evidence that spinal misalignments impact allergic reactions.
Another solution is to eliminate the source of the allergens. For example:
- Replace old pillows, rugs and blankets that collect dust.
- Wash bed linens at least twice a month, including blankets and quilts.
- Eat whole foods. Healthy foods boost the immune system and help alleviate allergic reactions.
Natural remedies can also relieve some allergy symptoms:
- Vitamin C can block histamines.
- Raw honey also relieves allergy symptoms. Take 2 tablespoons up to three times a day.
- Zinc helps control inflammation and supports immune function.
- Antronex supports the body’s natural anti-histamine function.
- Spanish Black Radish protects against free radicals.
