Alameda Chiropractor Offers Relief for Migraines
If you suffer from migraine headaches, you should know that chiropractic treatment has a track record of successfully alleviating migraine pain, according to chiropractor Dr. Cynthia Boyd of Symmetry Health Center in Oakland and Alameda.
A 2001 Duke University study found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for headaches that originate in the neck, and had fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headaches than medication.
A six-month study included 127 volunteers at the Chiropractic Research Center of Macquarie University who were split into a treatment group and a control group. Twenty-two percent of the treatment group reported more than a 90 percent reduction in their headaches.
In addition, the mean number of headaches per month dropped from 7.6 to 4.1. The treatment patients also reported a reduction in medication; many reported no need for medication after six months.
Studies also show a strong correlation between one’s neck posture and migraine headaches. A study published in the journal Headache in 1993 involved 372 patients with tension-type headaches and 225 control subjects. The study found a statistical connection between tension headaches and abnormal alignment of the cervical spine. The headache patients were found to have abnormally straightened cervical curves compared with the control subjects.
The lack of a cervical curve is what chiropractors refer to as a spinal misalignment. Such misalignments put pressure on the delicate nerves in the neck and back, interfering with the nervous system’s ability to send messages from the brain to the rest of the body. At the same time, they can disrupt blood flow along the spinal cord into the brain.
The solution is to realign the spine back to its normal curvature, lifting pressure off the nerves that are causing the headaches. That’s where chiropractic comes in.
In particular, chiropractors trained in Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) are focused on correcting spinal misalignments by remodeling and realigning the spine to restore normal nerve flow. The team at Symmetry Health Center is among only a handful of Oakland, Alameda and East Bay chiropractors trained in CBP, the most researched and results-oriented corrective chiropractic technique.
