Don’t Put Up With Vertigo

Don’t Put Up With Vertigo

If you suffer from vertigo, you know it can be a debilitating disease. But there is evidence that chiropractic can help.

What is vertigo?

Vertigo is not a disease, it is a symptom of other diseases. Vertigo is the feeling that you or your surroundings are spinning in circles, somersaults. It causes you to lose your balance and fall.

People with vertigo often describe this symptom with phrases like:

  • The surrounding space rotates in a circle
  • Feeling yourself moving
  • Tilt and fall
  • Overbalance
  • Being pulled in one direction
  • Tinnitus
  • Headache
  • Sweat
  • Feeling nauseous, vomiting
  • Abnormal eye movements

These symptoms can last from a few minutes to a few hours, or even longer.

Vertigo and Chiropractic

Vertigo can occur due to problems in the brain or central nervous system (central vertigo). It can also be caused by an inner ear problem (peripheral vertigo). In addition, one of the causes of Vertigo that many people do not care about is spinal pain.

The evidence is a study published in November 2006 in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research. The study included 60 patients diagnosed by their medical physicians as having vertigo.

Fifty-six of the 60 patients experienced a physical trauma before their vertigo began. Twenty-five had had automobile accidents, 16 had suffered a sports injury, and six slipped and fell on ice.

In every case, the trauma affected the head or neck area. What’s more, vertical subluxations – vertebrae that have shifted out of position – were found in all 60 patients.

All 60 of the study subjects received chiropractic care to correct the subluxations or misalignments of the spine. All of the patients in this study responded positively to chiropractic care, with the positive results taking from one to six months. Forty-eight of the patients were symptom-free within six months. The remaining 12 patients experienced a decrease in either the severity or frequency of their episodes.

The reason for the successful results is simple: the spine houses and protects the spinal cord and the nervous system. The nerves are your body’s communications system: They deliver messages from the brain to the body and back. As long as the communications system is unimpeded, the body functions as it should.

Subluxation, however, puts excessive pressure on the spinal nerves, interfering with the nerves’ ability to deliver their messages. Much like kinks in a hose, misaligned vertebrae impair your body’s ability to function at its best. That’s where chiropractic comes in.
