Can Back Pain or Neck Pain Lead to Health Issues?

Relieve chronic back pain sustainably

Thousands of Oakland and Alameda residents are living with back pain and neck pain on a daily basis. Unfortunately most people have grown accustomed to, or have learned to ignore their pain and discomfort. Whether they chalk it up to “normal” aging processes, or numb it with pain medication or drugs – the source of nerve irritation can lead to health complications down the road.

My name is Dr Cynthia Boyd, clinical director and lead chiropractor at Symmetry Health Center in Oakland and Alameda, California. I see dozens of patients suffering with back pain and neck pain on a daily basis. Patients tell me that they’ve been suffering with pain or discomfort for months or even years, and are finally ready to do something substantial about it.

What most back pain and neck pain sufferers don’t realize, is that pain is not normal. And that pain is often the last symptom of disease. That means that by the time you start experiencing pain, your body has gotten to a point that it no longer can heal on its own. Pain is therefore the body’s way of telling you something is wrong, and that it needs help. But when those calls for help are ignored or silenced with pain medication, things can grow from bad to worse pretty quickly.

The Root Cause of Back Pain and Neck Pain

My Oakland and Alameda chiropractic patients know this too well… that a healthy spine and nervous system is essential to one’s wellness, vitality, energy, and normal function of the body.

Before we understand the root cause of back pain and neck pain, we have to understand how the nervous system works.

The brain sends vital nerve energy down the spine, and into the nerves flowing into the every cell, vital organ, and limb of the body. Proper nerve energy is responsible for our mobility, our circulatory system, cardiovascular system, digestion system, immunity, and a long list of other voluntary and involuntary functions of our bodies.

Unfortunately however, our spines are subjected to various stresses throughout our lives, causing “subluxations” – a term chiropractors use to describe spinal misalignments. These spinal misalignments either stretch, or exert pressure on these delicate nerves that flow out of the spine, resulting in reduced or interrupted nerve flow.

The reduction or interruption of nerve energy can take days, weeks, months, or years to manifest itself as pain, after the initial trauma or injury. But in the meantime, reduced nerve energy is most likely causing the vital organs to go into a state of dysfunction and disease.

That’s why I tell my chiropractic patients in Oakland and Alameda to bring in loved ones to get checked by myself or another chiropractor for spinal misalignments. Because while they’re waiting it out or putting up with pain, their overall health is going down the drain.

What Causes Subluxations?

Subluxations or spinal misalignments can happen as early as birth, and don’t necessarily required you to be in a severe accident or experience a severe injury to set it off. Chiropractors like me generally treat patients who have subluxations from these sources:

1. Birth Trauma

If you’ve ever watched a birth video (or seen one in person), you’ll realize why most people are born subluxated. The force and twisting motion which the doctors use to pry an infant out of the birthing canal – whether with their hands or forceps – is enough to cause subluxations in the neck and mid back.

2. Poor Posture

Most of us either have our heads down into our phones or laptops, or are hunched over a keyboard all day at work. This segment of the population makes up a good 70% of my chiropractic patients in Oakland and Alameda – and most likely for other chiropractors around the world too. It’s just not the text neck or tech neck that I am referring to when I talk about poor posture. Poor posture can be a result of laying on the sofa the wrong way for too long, or sitting in traffic everyday leaning to one side or another.

3. Auto, Motorcycle, and Bike Accidents

A car, motorcycle, bike, or skateboard doesn’t have to be involved in an all-out wreck for you to experience spinal misalignments. As a matter of fact, the danger in minor to moderate accidents are that most people assume they’re fine, just because they don’t have any visible signs of injury or pain. However, with time and gravity working against you, those minor misalignments will turn into major health issues weeks, months, or years later.

4. Sports or Workplace Injuries

You don’t have to be Steph Curry to experience spinal misalignments as a result of an injury. Most of my sports injury patients at my chiropractic clinic in Oakland and Alameda range between 6 years old an 60… weekend warriors, pee-wee league athletes, and gym goers who fell awkwardly, slipped on something, or lifted something the wrong way. No matter what the circumstance, anytime you fall or experience any type of trauma to the back, chances are you’ve misaligned your spine.
