What Else Can I do for Viral Support?

Vitamin C supplement to fight the virus

This is a common question for those of us looking for alternative methods and nutrient supplementation with the hope of keeping us out of the hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vitamin C supplementation is one of the effective methods.

While the Bay Area is doing our best by practicing social distancing to avoid exposure to this virus, we must also do what we can to help support our own immune systems in the event that we do have contact. In order to have a good response to a virus we must keep our bodies healthy and replenish nutrients in order to help reach that goal.

That means exercising regularly, drinking plenty of water (we recommend 100 ounces a day!), and eating a well-balanced diet full of organic vegetables that are rich in phytochemicals and antioxidants. There are many components to our adaptive immune system that reacts to viruses and we can support those components with nutrition.

Are you Getting Enough Vitamin C?

Presently, hospitals around the world are using intravenous vitamin C to help patients fight against the COVID-19 virus.

Common colds, respiratory infections, immune enhancement, viral infections, and inflammation cover only a speck of health benefits Vitamin C has been proven to aid against. While we find ourselves deeper and deeper in the trenches of this pandemic it is imperative that we keep ourselves healthy, not only for our own benefit, but that of our Bay Area Community.

It has a plethora of functions. It helps with the formation of red blood cells, aids with absorption of iron, enhances white blood cell production, and helps fight bacterial infections.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported a study with group of participants taking 600 mg supplements of Vitamin C had upper respiratory tract infections reduced by 50%. (Amer. J. Clin. Nutr. 57:170-74).

It acts as a powerful anti-oxidant that guards against respiratory distress which also helps fight the progression of asthma. (Hatch GE Am J of Clin Nutr 1995; 61(suppl): p. 628S). Additionally, it decreased histamine secretions and blocks the production of vasoconstrictive leukotrines. Thereby helping fight inflammation and further helping those with asthma! (Werbach, M, MD. Healing through nutrition, Harper Collins Publishers, NY. p. 37).

Those with low intake of vitamin C have frequently been found to present with hypercholestremia, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. Gram doses of Vitamin C have lead to substantial reductions in circulating triglycerides. (Sokoloff, B, Hori, M, Saelhof, CC et al. J Am Geriatr Soc. 14:1239-60, 1966; Ginter, E, N Engl J Med. 294:559-60, 1976. Gooly, KL, Diamond, LH. Ann Intern Med. 93:511, 1980). It has also become instrumental in heart disease. Chronic deficiency of vitamin C may result in progressive oxidative damage, which may lead to permanent degenerative diseases in the heart (Mol Cell Biochem 1992 111:41-7).

It suffices to say that Vitamin C should not just be a supplement we lean into during these stressful times, but a habit and daily supplement that we should continue to take throughout the rest of our lives.
